भारतीय सिनेमा जगत में संगीत का अपना एक अलग ही महत्व है। यहां प्राचीन काल से ही एक समृद्ध परंपरा रही है। भारत में सांस्कृतिक काल से लेकर आधुनिक युग तक आते-आते संगीत की शैली और पद्धति में जबरदस्त बदलाव हुआ है। वैदिक काल के समय में संगीत आर्यों का मनोरंजन का एक साधन बताया जाता है| उत्तर वैदिक काल के ‘रामायण’ ग्रन्थ में भेरी, दुंदभि, वीणा, मृदंग व घड़ा आदि वाद्य यंत्रों व भँवरों के गान का वर्णन मिलता है, तो ‘महाभारत’ में कृष्ण की बाँसुरी के जादुई प्रभाव से सभी प्रभावित होते हैं।
चौथी शताब्दी के काल में भरत मुनि के ‘नाट्यशास्त्र’ पन्नो में संगीत पर वाद्यों का वर्णन, उनकी उत्पत्ति, उन्हें बजाने के तरीकों, स्वर, छन्द, लय, वादकों के गुणों और दोषों पर भी अपने विचार खुलकर लिखे है। बाद में 6 राग ‘भैरव’, ‘हिंडोल’, ‘कैशिक’, ‘दीपक’, ‘श्रीराग’ और ‘मेध’ प्रचार में आये। 11 शताब्दी में मुसलमान अपने साथ फारस का एक अनोखा संगीत लाए। उनकी और हमारी संगीत पद्धतियों के मेल से भारतीय संगीत में बहुत परिवर्तन देखने को मिला। उसी दौर के तानसेन, बैजूबावरा, रामदास व तानरंग खान के नाम आज भी प्रसिद्ध हैं। कहा तो ये भी जा सकता है कि भारतीय संगीत शताब्दियों के प्रयास व प्रयोग का ही एक परिणाम है।
