कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी ने मंगलवार सुबह ईंधन करों में वृद्धि को लेकर सरकार पर निशाना साधते हुए पूछा कि क्या सरकार "पुरानी बॉलीवुड फिल्मों से साहूकार" है। केरल के वायनाड से कांग्रेस सांसद ने हिंदी में ट्वीट किया, 'एक तरफ हम जनता को कर्ज लेने के लिए उकसा रहे हैं, दूसरी तरफ टैक्स वसूली से अंधाधुंध कमाई कर रहे हैं।

उन्होंने अपने ट्वीट को एक समाचार रिपोर्ट के साथ टैग किया जिसमें दावा किया गया था कि सरकार ने पेट्रोलियम उत्पादों पर उत्पाद शुल्क में 88% की वृद्धि की, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप सरकार के खजाने में ₹3.35 लाख करोड़ का नुकसान हुआ।

गांधी का यह हमला वित्त मंत्रालय में राज्य मंत्री पंकज चौधरी द्वारा सोमवार को संसद को सूचित किए जाने के एक दिन बाद आया है कि वित्त वर्ष 2011 में पेट्रोल पर उत्पाद शुल्क से 1.01 लाख करोड़ रुपये, डीजल से 2.33 लाख करोड़ रुपये और प्राकृतिक गैस से 1195 करोड़ रुपये एकत्र किए गए थे। केंद्र ने वित्त वर्ष 2020-21 के दौरान पेट्रोलियम, डीजल और प्राकृतिक गैस पर केंद्रीय उत्पाद शुल्क के माध्यम से 3.36 लाख करोड़ रुपये कमाए, जबकि वित्त वर्ष 2020 में यह 2.03 लाख करोड़ रुपये था।

केंद्र ने पिछले साल पेट्रोल पर उत्पाद शुल्क को 19.98 रुपये प्रति लीटर से बढ़ाकर 32.9 रुपये कर दिया था, ताकि अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर तेल की कीमतों में गिरावट से होने वाले लाभ को कई साल के निचले स्तर पर ले जाया जा सके, क्योंकि महामारी के कारण मांग में कमी आई है। डीजल पर उत्पाद शुल्क ₹15.83 प्रति लीटर से बढ़ाकर ₹31.8 कर दिया गया।
राज्य मंत्री ने यह भी कहा कि केंद्र ने ₹94 एकत्र किए। अप्रैल-जून 2021 के दौरान पेट्रोल और डीजल पर उत्पाद शुल्क के रूप में 18 करोड़। संघ द्वारा एकत्र किए गए सकल राजस्व में 2017-18 से 2020-21 तक पेट्रोलियम उत्पादों पर केंद्रीय उत्पाद शुल्क का औसत हिस्सा 12% था।
1 अप्रैल से 13 जुलाई के बीच जहां पेट्रोल की कीमतों में 39 गुना बढ़ोतरी हुई है, वहीं डीजल की कीमतों में 36 गुना बढ़ोतरी हुई है। नई दिल्ली, राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश, महाराष्ट्र, आंध्र प्रदेश, तेलंगाना, कर्नाटक, जम्मू और कश्मीर, ओडिशा, तमिलनाडु, केरल, बिहार, पंजाब और लद्दाख सहित कई राज्यों में पेट्रोल और डीजल की कीमतें 100 रुपये प्रति लीटर के पार पहुंच गई हैं। जिसका विरोध विपक्षी दलों ने किया।
