जब से नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू ने अचानक पंजाब कांग्रेस प्रमुख के पद से इस्तीफा दिया है, उनके भविष्य के रुख, गांधी परिवार के साथ संबंधों और कांग्रेस पार्टी के लिए इसके क्या मायने हैं, इसे लेकर अटकलें तेज हो गई हैं। गांधी भाई-बहनों द्वारा सिद्धू के कथित समर्थन से पार्टी के भीतर के दिग्गज नेताओं सहित कई राजनेता खुश नहीं हैं, जबकि कई ने कहा कि उन्होंने अपने इस्तीफे से दोनों को निराश किया।

मुख्यमंत्री चरणजीत सिंह चन्नी के कार्यभार संभालने के बाद कुछ नियुक्तियों से परेशान सिद्धू ने इस्तीफा दे दिया था और हालांकि उन्हें शांत करने के प्रयास किए गए थे, लेकिन यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि उनका इस्तीफा स्वीकार कर लिया गया है या नहीं। तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री अमरिंदर सिंह और सिद्धू के बीच कड़वी लड़ाई के बाद, कांग्रेस ने अमरिंदर की जगह चन्नी को लाने का फैसला किया।
