चाणक्य ने लिखा है कि जिस गुरु के पास अध्यात्मिक ज्ञान नहीं है उसे उसे त्याग देना चाहिए। जिस शिक्षक के पास ज्ञान का अभाव हो, उस शिक्षक को त्याग देना चाहिए। वहीं उस धर्म को भी त्याग देना चाहिए जिसमें दया या त्याग भावना न हो। क्रोधी पत्नी और स्नेहहीन बंधुओं का त्याग करना उचित होता है।
धर्म-कर्म:प्रकृति आनंद से भरपूर है; प्राण और शरीर का योग जीवन है
अर्थात् गुरु की परिभाषा बहुत ऊँची है इसलिए हर किसी को गुरु नहीं बनाया जा सकता। जो काम, क्रोध, मोह और लोभ से ऊपर हो। शिष्य की सामाजिक, न्यायिक और आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान के साथ व्याकुलता और जिज्ञासा को शांत करने वाला हो वो ही सफल गुरु है और प्रभु इच्छा से ही ऐसे गुरु की प्राप्ति होती है।
