भगवान शिव अपने भक्तों को आशीर्वाद और वरदान देने के साथ साथ भक्त की इच्छा पूरी करने का सदैव प्रयास भी करते हैं। भगवान शंकर ने बाणासुर की रक्षा का वचन दिया था इस लिए भगवान शंकर कैलाश पर्वत को छोड़कर शोणितपुर आ गए।जब बाणासुर की पत्नी वाणी ने पूजा के पश्चात भगवान शंकर को पहले खाना खिलाना चाहा तो बाणासुर ने अंहभाव के अभिभूत हो कर कहा कि मैं राजा हूं और प्रसाद पर मेरा पहला अधिकार है।

मेरा मानना है कि बाणासुर ने जिस प्रकार से भगवान शंकर को आसन पर से उठा कर अपमानित किया उसके बाबजूद भगवान शंकर की दयालुता और उदारता तथा महानता देखिए कि उन्होंने कहा कि राजा होने के नाते प्रसाद पर पहला अधिकार बाणासुर का ही है। जिस समय बाणासुर क्रोध में भरकर अपनी पत्नी वाणी का गला घोंटने का प्रयास करते हैं तो उसी समय भगवान शंकर वाणी को बचाने चले आते हैं।
बाणासुर के प्रश्न का उत्तर देते हुए भगवान शंकर ने कहा कि जिस प्रकार से मैं तुम्हारा रक्षक हूं उसी प्रकार से प्रत्येक भक्त की रक्षा करना मेरा दायित्व है। इस लिए जहां तक संभव हो सके अपने आप को प्रभु को पूर्ण रूप से समर्पित कर दो फिर आपकी रक्षा करने के लिए वह दोडे-दोडे चले आएंगे।
