उन्होंने बताया कि भगवान श्रीराम के विवाह के बाद उनके राज्याभिषेक की तैयारियों चल रही थी, तो उसी समय दासी मंथरा की बातों में आकर माता कैकेयी ने राजा दशरथ से श्रीराम को 14 वर्ष का वनवास देकर भरत के लिए राज मांग लिया। माता कैकेयी को दिए वचन में बंधे राजा दशरथ को बड़े दुखी हृद्य के साथ श्रीराम चंद्र, माता सीता व लक्ष्मण को चौदह साल के वनवास पर जाने की अनुमित दे दी। श्रीराम चंद्र, माता सीता व लक्ष्मण वन में चले गए। रास्ते में गंगा को पार करवाने के लिए उन्होंने एक केवट से मदद मांगी। केवट ने भगवान श्रीराम को गंगा पार करवाने से पहले उनके चरण धोकर बड़ी श्रद्धा के साथ उनके चरण अमृत का पान किया। इसके बाद भगवान श्रीराम, माता सीता व लक्ष्मण केवट की नाव पर सवार हुए। भगवान श्रीराम जी का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त कर केवट गदगद हो गया।
