भारत की युवा प्रतिभाओं को तराशने का श्रेय द्रविड़ को जाता है। वह अब अगले महीने श्रीलंका के दौरे पर जाने वाली भारत की सीमित ओवरों की टीम के कोच होंगे। इस टीम की अगुवाई शिखर धवन करेंगे।
द्रविड़ अब भारत ए और अंडर — 19 टीमों के साथ नहीं जाते हैं लेकिन इसकी शुरुआत उन्होंने ही की थी कि दौरे पर जाने वाले प्रत्येक खिलाड़ी को मैच खेलने का मौका जरूर मिले।
ईएसपीएनक्रिकइन्फो के अनुसार, ”मैं उन्हें पहले ही बता देता था कि यदि आप मेरे साथ ‘ए’ टीम के दौरे पर आये हो तो फिर आप यहां से मैच खेले बिना नहीं जाओगे। जब मैं जूनियर स्तर पर खेलता था तो मेरे अपने अनुभव थे। ‘ए’ टीम के दौरे पर जाना और मैच खेलने का मौका न मिलना बहुत बुरा होता था। ”
उन्होंने कहा, ”आप अच्छा प्रदर्शन करते हो। आप 700—800 रन बनाते हो। आप टीम के साथ जाते हो और वहां आपको अपनी योग्यता दिखाने का मौका नहीं मिलता है। इसके बाद आपको चयनकर्ताओं का ध्यान खींचने के लिये अगले सत्र में फिर से वे 800 रन बनाने होते हैं।”
द्रविड़ ने कहा, ”ऐसा करना आसान नहीं होता है, इसलिए इसकी कोई गारंटी नहीं कि आपको फिर से मौका मिलेगा। इसलिए आपको शुरू में खिलाड़ियों को कहना होता है कि यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ 15 खिलाड़ी हैं और हम इनके साथ खेलेंगे। भले ही यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ एकादश न हो। अंडर—19 स्तर पर हम मैचों के बीच पांच—छह बदलाव कर सकते हैं।”
द्रविड़ ने कहा कि भारतीय क्रिकेटरों को अब दुनिया में सबसे फिट माना जाता है लेकिन एक जमाना था जबकि उन्हें फिटनेस का जरूरी ज्ञान नहीं था तथा वे अधिक चुस्त आस्ट्रेलियाई और दक्षिण अफ्रीकी खिलाड़ियों से ईर्ष्या करते थे। अब जबकि द्रविड़ राष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट अकादमी में प्रमुख हैं तब वह अगली पीढ़ी के क्रिकेटरों को तैयार करने में अहम भूमिका निभा रहे हैं।
