नई दिल्ली: लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल अनिल चौहान को बुधवार को अगले चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ (सीडीएस) के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया है, रक्षा मंत्रालय ने कहा कि सेवानिवृत्त लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल भारत सरकार के सचिव के रूप में भी कार्य करेंगे। प्रभारी और अगले आदेश तक, सैन्य मामलों के विभाग ने कहा।

रक्षा मंत्रालय ने कहा, “भारत सरकार लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल अनिल चौहान (सेवानिवृत्त) को अगले चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ (सीडीएस) के रूप में नियुक्त करती है, जो भारत सरकार, सैन्य मामलों के विभाग के सचिव के रूप में भी काम करेंगे।
पूर्व सीडीएस जनरल बिपिन रावत की हवाई दुर्घटना में मौत के बाद नए सीडीएस की नियुक्ति पर चर्चा हुई।
केंद्र सरकार नए चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ (सीडीएस) की नियुक्ति के लिए सेवारत और सेवानिवृत्त सैन्य अधिकारियों दोनों के नामों पर विचार कर रही थी। देश के पहले सीडीएस जनरल बिपिन रावत की पिछले साल 8 दिसंबर को एक हवाई दुर्घटना में मौत के बाद यह पद खाली था।
2019 में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के नेतृत्व में केंद्र की बीजेपी सरकार के दोबारा चुने जाने के छह महीने के भीतर नए सीडीएस की नियुक्ति के फैसले को देश के शीर्ष सैन्य ढांचे में सबसे बड़ा सुधार बताया गया। जनरल रावत को देश की तीनों सेनाओं में समन्वय के लिए पहला सीडीएस नियुक्त किया गया था।
सीडीएस के बारे में जानें
सीडीएस को सैन्य मामलों के विभाग के सचिव के रूप में नियुक्त किया जाता है, जो वर्तमान में अतिरिक्त सचिव के पद के तहत काम करता है। सीडीएस इंटीग्रेटेड डिफेंस स्टाफ का प्रमुख भी होता है। सरकार ने रक्षा कार्यक्रमों में सीडीएस को मेक इन इंडिया का प्रभारी भी बनाया है।
8 दिसंबर 2021 को तमिलनाडु में खराब मौसम के चलते वायुसेना का Mi-17 हेलीकॉप्टर हादसे का शिकार हो गया था. इस हेलीकॉप्टर में सीडीएस बिपिन रावत और उनकी पत्नी मधुलिका रावत समेत कुल 14 लोग सवार थे. नीलगिरी और तमिलनाडु के बीच कुन्नूर के जंगल में हुए हादसे में हेलीकॉप्टर में सवार सभी लोगों की जान चली गई।
