कांग्रेस के चरणजीत सिंह चन्नी ने सोमवार को पंजाब के 16वें मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली, उन्होंने कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह की जगह ली, जिन्होंने पार्टी की राज्य इकाई के अध्यक्ष नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू के साथ जारी राजनीतिक खींचतान के बीच शनिवार को इस्तीफा दे दिया। चंडीगढ़ के राजभवन में चन्नी के शपथ ग्रहण समारोह में शामिल होने वालों में कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी भी शामिल थे।

58 वर्षीय दलित सिख नेता को राज्यपाल बनवारीलाल पुरोहित ने चंडीगढ़ के राजभवन में एक सादे समारोह में पद और गोपनीयता की शपथ दिलाई। उन्होंने पंजाबी में शपथ ली। 1963 में कुराली के पास पंजाब के भजौली गांव में जन्मे चन्नी, जो एक दलित सिख हैं, कांग्रेस पार्टी में तेजी से आगे बढ़े हैं। उन्होंने चमकौर साहिब निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से तीन बार विधानसभा के सदस्य के रूप में भी कार्य किया है। चन्नी ने अमरिंदर सिंह के मंत्रिमंडल में तकनीकी शिक्षा मंत्री के रूप में भी काम किया।
शपथ ग्रहण समारोह से पहले, चन्नी ने पंजाब के कांग्रेस प्रभारी हरीश रावत से मुलाकात की। बाद में दिन में, चन्नी का अमरिंदर सिंह से मिलने का कार्यक्रम है। अमरिंदर सिंह ने पंजाब कांग्रेस कमेटी (पीपीसीसी) के प्रमुख नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू के बीच महीनों तक चली खींचतान के बाद शनिवार को पंजाब के मुख्यमंत्री पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया। कांग्रेस ने विधायक दल (सीएलपी) की बैठक आयोजित करने से एक घंटे से भी कम समय पहले इस्तीफा दिया, जिसे मूल रूप से अंदरूनी कलह को कम करने की योजना बनाई गई थी।
अमरिंदर सिंह के इस्तीफे और घंटों की बैठकों और विचार-विमर्श के बाद, पार्टी ने सर्वसम्मति से चन्नी को रविवार को पंजाब के कांग्रेस विधायक दल (सीएलपी) के नेता के रूप में चुना। राहुल गांधी ने घोषणा के बाद छनी को बधाई दी। “श्री चरणजीत सिंह चन्नी जी को नई जिम्मेदारी के लिए बधाई। हमें पंजाब के लोगों से किए गए वादों को पूरा करना जारी रखना चाहिए। उनका विश्वास सर्वोपरि है, ”गांधी ने ट्वीट किया।
