मकर संक्रांति से पूर्व शाम के समय लोग लकड़ियां जलाकर आग सेंकते हुए लोकगीतों का आनंद लेते हैं। ढोल की थाप पर थिरकते लोग गिद्दा और भांगड़ा करते हुए लोहड़ी पर्व मनाते हैं। इस उत्सव को विशेषकर पंजाब के लोगों द्वारा बड़े उत्साह के साथ मनाया जाता है।इस अवसर पर खुशी मनाते हुए रेवड़ी, गजक, मूंगफली एवं गुड़-चना बांटते हुए बधाइयां दी जाती हैं। नर-नारी, बालक-वृद्ध सभी एकसाथ इस उत्सव में नाचने लगते हैं।
वस्तुत: इसके पीछे मकर संक्रांति को प्रात:काल नदियों में स्नान करने के बाद आने वाले लोगों के लिए आग जलाकर रखने का धार्मिक महत्व भी छिपा हुआ है। भारत की लोक-संस्कृति में परोपकार की भावना निहित होती है। देशभर में लोहड़ी की धूम मची रहती है। लोग ढोल-नगाड़ों के साथ मस्ती में झूमते हुए एक-दूसरे को बधाई देते हैं। पंजाबी लोग जहां भी जाते हैं अपने गीत, त्योहार और संस्कृति से हमेशा जुड़े रहते हैं।
पंजाब का आदमी कहीं भी रहे, वह अपनी मेहनत से अपनी पहचान बना ही लेता है। पंजाबी समाज देश-प्रदेश व समाज के विकास में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता आ रहा है। लोहड़ी जैसे परंपरागत त्योहार सभी को उत्साह व उमंग से भर देते हैं। इस त्योहार के माध्यम से समाज में आपसी मेल-मिलाप व भाईचारा बढ़ता है।
