महर्षि पुलस्त्य जी और महर्षि लोमहर्षण जी ने वामन पुराण में का यकवन तीर्थ का वर्णन करते हुए बताया कि इस तीर्थ की उत्पति महाभारत काल से पूर्व की है। एक वार नैमिषारण्य के निवासी बहुत ज्यादा संख्या में कुरुक्षेत्र की भूमि के अंतर्गत सरस्वती नदी में स्नान करने हेतु का यवक वन में आए थे। वे सरस्वती में स्नान न कर सके। उन्होंने यज्ञोपवितिक नामक तीर्थ की कल्पना की और स्नान किया, फिर भी शेष लोग उस में प्रवेश ना पा सके तब से मां सरस्वती ने उनकी इच्छा पूर्ण करने के लिए साक्षात कुंज रूप में प्रकट होकर दर्शन दिए और पश्चिम-वाहनी होकर बहने लगी। इसलिए कहते हैं कि यकेश्र्वर तीर्थ एवं मंदिर महाभारत काल से पूर्व के हैं।

धौम्य ऋषि महाभारत के अनुसार व्यघ्रपद नामक ऋषि के पुत्र और बहुत बड़े शिव-भक्त थे और शिव के प्रसाद से अजर, अमर और दिव्य ज्ञान संपन्न हो गये थे। धौम्य एक ऋषि का नाम जिन्हें ‘आयोद’ भी कहते थे। इनके आरुणि, उपमन्यु और वेद नामक तीन शिष्य थे। धौम्य ऋषि, जो पश्चिम दिशा में तारे के रूप में स्थित माने जाते हैं। धौम्य ऋषि की कहानी है जिनके आश्रम में आरुणि पढ़ा करते थे। आरुणि ने एक रात मूसलाधार बारिश के पानी को आश्रम में प्रवेश करने से रोकने के लिए खुद को रात भर मेढ़ पर लिटाए रखा और आरुणि के इस कठिन कर्म से प्रभावित होकर आचार्य धौम्य ने उनका नाम उद्दालक आरुणि रख दिया था, यानी उद्धारक आरुणि। इनके समेत 10 हजार ब्राह्मणों के साथ यहीं रहते थे। उनमें 1500 के लगभग ब्राह्मण क्षत्रिय-निष्ठ थे, जो प्रतिदिन वैदिक धर्मानुष्ठान एवं यज्ञ करते थे।
