भारतीय अमेरिकी मुसलमानों और सिखों ने भारतीय मूल की सीनेटर कमला हैरिस को उपराष्ट्रपति पद के लिए डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी का उम्मीदवार चुने जाने का स्वागत करते हुए इसे पूरे समुदाय के लिए एक उल्लेखनीय सफलता करार दिया। के राष्ट्रपति पद के चुनाव में डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी के उम्मीदवार जो बाइडेन ने भारतीय मूल की सीनेटर कमला हैरिस को उपराष्ट्रपति पद का उम्मीदवार (अपना रनिंग मेट) चुना है। ऐसा पहली बार हुआ है, जब कोई काली महिला देश की किसी बड़ी पार्टी की ओर से उपराष्ट्रपति पद की उम्मीदवार बनी है।

एआईएम के कार्यकारी निदेशक कलीम कवाजा ने अमेरिका सरकार में दूसरे सबसे बड़े पद के लिए उम्मीदवार बनने में दूसरी पीढ़ी की भारतीय-अमेरिकी की उल्लेखनीय सफलता पर खुशी व्यक्त की। ‘सिख काउंसिल ऑफ़ रिलिजन एंड एजुकेशन’ के अध्यक्ष एवं राष्ट्रीय सिख अभियान के वरिष्ठ सलाहकार डॉ. राजवंत सिंह ने भी इस फैसले का स्वागत किया। उन्होंने कहा कि अमेरिका में राष्ट्रीय कार्यालय के लिए किसी अल्पसंख्यक का चयन करना एक प्रमुख पार्टी द्वारा उठाया गया एक बड़ा कदम है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘इसका मतलब है कि यह अश्वेत, महिलाओं और सभी प्रवासियों के लिए एक बड़ी बात है।’’
